Some moments change your life forever.

You just don't realize it when they're happening.

I wasn't supposed to be at that party.

The only reason I was there was because my best friend, Sanvi, refused to take no for an answer.

It was one of those ridiculously expensive masquerade galas where everyone wore masks and pretended to be someone else.

Rich people and their weird hobbies.

I hated every second of it.

The noise.

The crowd.

The fake smiles.

Everything.

So, naturally, I escaped.

I slipped away from the ballroom and wandered into a quieter corridor.

For the first time that night, I could finally breathe.

Then the lights went out.

The entire hallway fell into darkness.

A few startled gasps echoed around me.

My heart jumped.

Before I could react, I bumped into someone.

Hard.

Strong arms caught me before I hit the floor.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

I couldn't see his face.

Couldn't see anything.

Yet somehow, I was painfully aware of him.

The warmth of his hand.

The scent of expensive cologne.

The steady rhythm of his breathing.

My fingers instinctively curled around his wrist.

A rough scar brushed against my skin.

The stranger went completely still.

So did I. And then...

something happened.

Something neither of us should have allowed.

I don't know who moved first.

Maybe it was him.

Maybe it was me.

But suddenly there was no distance left between us.

For one reckless second, I forgot where I was.

Forgot who I was.

The kiss was brief.

Soft.

Yet it felt powerful enough to stop time itself.

No crowd.

No noise.

Just him.

And me.

Then a phone rang.

The moment shattered instantly.

The stranger stepped away. As if nothing had happened.

As if I was just another stranger he'd accidentally bumped into.

I heard him answer the call.

His voice was calm.

Cold.

Terrifyingly calm.

"I told you not to call me unless it's important."

Silence.

Then—

"I'm on my way."

Something about that voice sent a shiver down my spine.

A few seconds ago, he had felt safe.

Now he felt dangerous.

The kind of man people warned you about.

The kind of man you should stay away from.

The lights came back.

I looked up.

But he was already gone.

No name.

No face.

No explanation.

Nothing.

All he left behind was the memory of a scar...

and a voice I couldn't forget.
